Novo Nordisk Devices has established a new R&D department dedicated to the discovery and development of medical devices with the potential to transform the treatment paradigm for a broad range of chronic diseases that currently rely on injection based therapies. The combined worldwide population in scope counts hundreds of millions of patients within Novo Nordisk’s core therapeutic areas of Diabetes, Obesity, Growth Disorder and Haemophilia.
Novo Nordisk is looking for Research Engineers and Scientists to drive concept development with key focus on design, prototyping, and evaluation of novel device concepts.
About the department
The Alternative Delivery department lies in the intersection between medical device engineering and drug discovery and research. A core focus lies within alternative drug delivery technologies that can alleviate the need for frequent injections for patients within Novo Nordisk’s core therapeutic disease areas. Examples of technologies in scope include oral devices, implants and transdermal patches. Beyond drug delivery, we are exploring implant devices to enable novel stem cell-based therapeutics. Within type 1 diabetes, specifically, Novo Nordisk is currently pursuing a cure based on stem cells, and in Device R&D we are working closely with our stem cell scientists and academic partners to develop an implantable device that can encapsulate these cells and ensure their functionality while protecting them from the patient’s immune system.
The department comprises a diverse mix of competencies spanning across multiple natural sciences and engineering disciplines. We work together with both industry and academic partners and as well as with several areas of Novo Nordisk Drug Research and Development such as formulation science, pharmacology, non-clinical development, and more. The scope of our activities span from early technology discovery to device development for phase 1 clinical trials.
The position
We are looking for both experienced professionals as well as young talents to join our team. The responsibilities within the position include driving concept development through prototype design, manufacturing and evaluations.
Furthermore, designing and conducting experiments to support concept development and acting as subject matter expert on behalf of Device R&D in the collaboration with stakeholders from Drug R&D. Additionally, you will be collaborating with external R&D partners from both industry and academia on the development of device concepts and pilot manufacturing of devices. It is also an important aspect of the position to follow the latest technological developments in both industry and academia and support technology scouting activities on evaluation of external technologies.

A MSc degree or equivalent relevant experience within Engineering, Physics, or related Natural Science field
Experience with early stage concept development
Experience with experiment design
Experience with 3D CAD construction
Aptitude for solving complex problems and finding solutions through both analytic approach and through leaning through experimentation
A collaborative mind-set combined with the ability to define own tasks and deliver independently
Ability to thrive in projects that require striking the balance between research towards the ideal and execution with respect to timelines
Proficiency in both oral and written English
Additional, preferred qualifications:
Medical device development experience, preferably class III medical devices
Experience from drug research
Knowledge of requirement engineering
Experience working in cross functional projects
Experience with translating academic research into product development in industry
Experience in working with Contract Research Organisations (CROs) and Contract Manufacturing Organisations (CMOs) in a medical device or pharmaceutical context
