Fellowships in Hellenic Studies 2018-19

The Center for Hellenic Studies (CHS) offers fellowship opportunities for the 2018-19 academic year. All fellows receive appointments for one year, beginning in July, and receive full access to the resources of the Harvard library system for the duration of their fellowship.

Fellowship awards may also include:

financial support up to $18,000;
housing at the CHS in Washington, DC for up to 16 weeks during the fall (August 29, 2018-December 19, 2018) or spring (January 30, 2019-May 22, 2019) terms;
subsidized health insurance; and
travel support.
About the Program
The purpose of the fellowship program is to encourage and support research of the highest quality on topics related to ancient Greece or, more generally, Hellenism. This includes but is not limited to the study of Greek-speaking cultures and their influence on others – from those who inhabited the more immediate regions around the Mediterranean to more distant populations in Europe and Asia.

The proposed research may concern any aspect of Hellenism approached through any discipline including, but not limited to, area and ethnic studies, anthropology, archaeology, art history, education, history, literary criticism, the natural and physical sciences, philology, philosophy, political science, religious studies, sociology, as well as related subfields.

The fellowship program aims to develop and support a network of researchers, and places an emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches that reflect the evolving nature of Hellenic studies. The program also seeks to foster interaction among researchers at various stages in their engagement with Hellenism who represent diverse social, educational, cultural, and professional backgrounds.

The program provides for flexibility in terms of residency at the CHS and levels of financial support. The fellowship program manager will work with successful candidates to determine the exact terms of their appointments.

Non-residential option for researchers in Greece and Cyprus
Researchers in Greece and Cyprus whose work requires continued access to material on site (e.g. archives, artifacts, archaeological sites) may apply for a non-residential fellowship. Successful candidates will report on a regular basis to a senior fellow and will have the opportunity to visit the CHS offices in Nafplio and in Washington, DC. The fellowship program manager will work with successful candidates to determine the exact terms of their appointments.

Collaborative project option
The CHS welcomes proposals from teams of two or more researchers working on collaborative, interdisciplinary projects. Examples of projects include co-written and co-edited volumes, data processing, database development, and website development. The program provides for flexibility in terms of residency. The fellowship program manager will work with successful candidates to determine the exact terms of their appointments.

Applicants pursuing this option should complete the collaborative project application (see link below). Project collaborators must upload a detailed research proposal of no more than 3,000 words. In addition, each principal investigator must upload 1) a curriculum vitae documenting her/his qualifications to conduct the proposed research, for example, through recent publications and presentations, and 2) a sample of published, performed, or publicly exhibited work of no more than 10,000 words. Project collaborators will also provide the contact information for three references who can evaluate the proposed collaborative project.

Eligibility
Anyone who is qualified to benefit from the resources of the CHS and contribute to the goals as outlined above may apply. Applicants must be at least 21 years old. The CHS rigorously supports the principles of affirmative action and equal opportunity in its selection of fellows.

Current PhD candidates and researchers who have been admitted to a graduate program are not eligible to apply.

Dissemination of Outcomes and Acknowledgement of Support
Fellows are expected to document the evolution of their projects and share their work in progress. After the fellowship year ends on June 30, 2019, all fellows will submit a report of 1500-2000 words, including an abstract, findings, and a short, select bibliography.

The CHS will invite up to eight fellows to return to the CHS in the following academic year to give a brief presentation about their work at the symposium on Saturday, December 7, 2019. The presenters will receive a $500 honorarium and will submit an article of no more than 5000 words for possible inclusion in Classics@.

Fellows will acknowledge the support they receive for their research and inform the CHS of publications, public performances, and exhibitions resulting from their work as fellows.

Criteria Used in the Awarding of Fellowships
The CHS will only fund proposals that

1. Outline clearly and in detail how a fellowship and residency at the CHS will enable the proposed research and lead to its completion;

2. Show how the outcomes of the project will contribute to the body of research and promote further inquiry and engagement both in the fellow’s immediate field and in the humanities in general;

3. Demonstrate the capability of the researcher(s) to achieve the proposed outcomes as reflected in documentation that accompanies the proposals: for example, academic achievement, prior publications, record of artistic accomplishments, recommendations, and letters of support.

The CHS particularly encourages proposals from researchers who

1. Propose collaborative, interdisciplinary projects

2. Seek to use and develop information technologies

3. Can take full advantage of all the resources that the CHS can provide, particularly its collection of printed and digital resources.
