Measuring low level PAH contamination in edible oils

JRC scientists developed and validated a cost efficient analytical method for the determination of four EU marker polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in edible oil to be used for official food control.

PAHs constitute a large group of chemicals that can be introduced into the food chain from environmental sources or by some food processing. Elevated levels of PAHs are recurrently found in edible oils. Some PAHs are classified as human carcinogens. Consequently, the EU set maximum levels of four marker PAHs to protect public health (Commission Regulation (EU) No 835/2011 amending Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 as regards maximum levels for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in foodstuffs).
