JRC scientists developed an analytical method for the determination of the four EU marker polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in cereal products. This work is part of the JRC hosted European Union Reference Laboratory for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (EURL PAH).
Food contamination with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) – some of them classified as carcinogenic and mutagenic - might originate from processes during manufacturing of food or via the environment. The analysis of PAHs in cereal products is challenging due to very low content levels. Therefore is a need for a suitable analytical methods. JRC scientists developed a method based on gas chromatography/mass spectrometry that is suitable for measurements of the four EU marker PAHs in the sub-microgram per kilogram range in cereal based products. The method in-house validated and was rolled out to EU National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) for PAHs.
