JRC scientists, in collaboration with the University of Madrid, designed a new surface coating exhibiting antifouling properties. The aim of this material is to improve the surface of medical devices.
Considerable efforts are being made to develop new materials and technologies to increase the performances of medical components and devices. Whereas the bulk characteristic requirements are mostly mechanical or optical, surface properties of such devices must be well designed to interact in an appropriate manner with biological systems i.e. to guarantee biocompatibility while reducing the microbial adhesion and viability to prevent infections. Tailored surface treatment and coating are thus fundamental for designing high performance medical devices.
