JRC together with a consortium of leading international metrology laboratories counted single DNA molecules in solution using different analytical methods including digital polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The study revealed a good performance of the different methods and confirms the strengths of digital PCR as a major technology in life sciences.
Digital PCR is being applied for many purposes such as for pathogen detection, the monitoring of food and water safety, biomarker quantification, the detection of genetic variants in cancer patients, copy number alteration in stem cells, the monitoring of transplant recipients, and the quantification of massively parallel sequence libraries.
