JRC scientists - in close collaboration with international organisations – revised the first guidance on Good Cell Culture Practice (GCCP) by expanding it to aspects of quality assurance for in vitro cell culture focusing on the increasingly diverse cell types and culture formats used in research and elsewhere.
The first guidance on GCCP, coordinated by the JRC in 2005, identified a set of core principles of best practice for working with cell and tissue culture systems. As a result of a workshop organised in 2015 by the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing at the US John Hopkins University, scientists of the JRC and other European, Japanese and North American organisations summarised the more recent developments in cell and tissue cultures, and in particular addressed the new technological developments of human pluripotent stem cell lines and stem-cell derived models.
