It was estimated that over 50,000 patients, in Europe, were diagnosed with thyroid cancer (TC) in 2012. The incidence rates have been increasing over time mainly due to the widespread use of ultrasound examinations in detecting small tumors.
Female incidence rates are approximately three times higher than that of males. The vast majority of TCs have a good prognosis with the exception of some rare types.
