Validation of the "Cristallini Method" for sampling of Uranium hexafluoride (UF6)

Scientists from the JRC Geel in Belgium have published a JRC-technical report contributing to the validation of the so-called "Cristallini” method for collecting sampling of UF6 at nuclear facilities for safeguards purposes.

The "Cristallini" method for sampling of UF6 (Uranium hexafluoride) has been developed by the Brazilian-Argentine Agency for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials (ABACC) several years ago. It works by adsorption and hydrolysis of UF6 gas in alumina pellets inside a fluorothene P-10 tube. This method has several advantages compared to the currently used sampling method, for which UF6 is only transferred into a stainless steel tube for transportation in the gas phase, with the hydrolysis and isotopic analysis being performed after the transport at the analytical laboratory. Using the “Cristallini” sampling method the transport of nuclear samples to be analysed is cheaper and relatively safer concerning radiological protection aspects, due to the much smaller amount of radioactive material and to the non-volatile character of the samples. For the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) the advantages of the new sampling method are considered as a significant logistical improvement for safeguarding nuclear facilities of the nuclear fuel cycle working with UF6.
