Scientists at the JRC Cancer Information Group created an innovatively comprehensive tool to improve the quality and comparability of cancer data.
The harmonisation of cancer information from different sources is key to EU policy making. Accurate and comparable data on cancer is needed for computation of incidence, prevalence, survival and mortality statistics, to assess the magnitude of the cancer burden and its evolution and, thus, inform policy makers about the resources required to plan and evaluate public health programmes. Such data are also the basis for epidemiological research on causes and outcomes.
In this context, the JRC Cancer Information group, which hosts the Secretariat of the European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR), created a Working Group involving the main European stakeholders in the cancer data domain between 2013-2014. The aim of this Working Group was to establish a comprehensive and standardised list of quality checks to validate data collected by European cancer registries and European research projects.
