On 6 April the Commission adopted a legislative package on Smart Borders, including a Communication on Stronger and Smarter Information Systems for Borders and Security.
This Communication sets out actions to improve the functioning and interoperability of existing information systems and potential new systems to address information gaps. Among other actions, a fingerprint search functionality will be added to the Schengen Information System (SIS) through an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), as foreseen by the existing legal framework. AFIS should be operational by mid-2017.
