One year from its conception, the European Commission's Knowledge Centre on Migration and Demography (KCMD) has made significant progress and has provided EU policymakers with valuable instruments to access information and data about migration.

On the 1-year anniversary of the KCMD, let's have a look at the main achievements and future plans of the Knowledge Centre, as well as at a new migration profile of Mali.

In 2017, the JRC launched a pilot programme to welcome refugee scientists for one-week training programmes at the JRC. The objective of the programme is to introduce them to the European research context, which would allow them to pursue scientific activities in their field of expertise and to help them build up work experience, qualifications and contacts for future employment in Europe.

This scheme is in line with the efforts of the EU, academia and NGOs to help refugee scientists and researchers use their skills and experience to connect to other European researchers.

An Interim Storage Facility (ISF) at JRC Ispra is set to host the nuclear waste from the site, including already existing waste and waste deriving from the ongoing decommissioning of the JRC Ispra nuclear installations. All nuclear waste from the Ispra site will be transported to the Italian National nuclear waste repository when this facility is completed.
