New EU-funded project CoSTREAM (www.costream.eu) targets the common mechanisms and pathways of stroke, Alzheimer’s disease to improve disease prevention and treatment, by combining clinical, genetic, epidemiologic, metabolic and radiologic research to develop an organ-on-a-chip in vitro model for the blood-brain connection that will revolutionise drug-development. CoSTREAM investigates 12000 cases of stroke, 20000 cases of Alzheimer's disease & 74000 healthy controls with 25 years of follow-up.

The aim of the MANGO project is to reduce the energy consumption of large data centres without limiting either their performance or the features of the applications being run. Its approach is to develop a prototype high-performance massive computing system that will improve the performance of the machine cores and interconnection of their components, as well as optimise resource management, power monitoring and cooling, and programming models.

EU-funded scientists have used a revolutionary image stacking and matching technique to reveal unprecedented details of the surface of Mars.

The research team, based at University College London (UCL), and part of the FP7 PROVIDE project have revealed exciting photos of Martian surface, including ancient lakebeds uncovered by NASA’s Curiosity rover, NASA’s MER-A rover tracks and Home Plate’s rocks. They also released images of the ‘lost’ British landing spacecraft Beagle-2 that landed on Mars in December 2004 but failed to make contact with Earth.

EU researchers are helping national and regional transportation hubs to better mitigate the risks of the spread of transmissible pathogens.

In 2014 there were 3.3 billion flights around the world, 44 % of which were long haul. Furthermore, the number of airline passengers is forecast to double over the course of the next 15 years, meaning the risk of the quick and – at times – uncontrollable spread of naturally or intentionally released person-to-person transmissible pathogens, such as Ebola and anthrax, is on the rise.
