Chromatin structure is highly dynamic, varying during genome maintenance in accordance with the task, especially more so when DNA damage occurs. An EU project worked on unravelling the mechanics of DNA damage response (DDR) and its significance in disease.

DNA is wrapped around histones to form chromatin and its conformation can vary with degree of compaction. Essential processes such as DNA repair, transcription and replication are tightly linked, demanding specific chromatin conformations.

The EU-funded INSPACE project uses Space Division Multiplexing technology to create a sustainable broadband connection.

The internet and broadband applications that we all use on a daily basis via our connected devices require huge amounts of bandwidth. The associated broadband traffic, especially for video-based applications, increases with an annual growth rate of more than 50 %. If society wants to keep pace with such developments, it must continuously upgrade the capacity of its backbone broadband networks in a way that is both scalable and cost effective.

Many people spend the majority of their time in the home and office or travelling between the two, where they are exposed to air pollution in the form of aerosols made up of fine solid particles or liquid droplets. The extent to which this regular exposure to aerosols in urban homes, workplaces, and private and public transport affects humans has not yet been fully determined.

In Europe, buildings are responsible for over 40 % of total energy consumption and 36 % of overall CO2 emissions. An EU initiative introduced a lightweight, durable, cost-effective and high-performance panel for retrofitting.

Less than 1.5 % of the European building stock is newly built each year. Older buildings that represent the majority of this stock mostly exhibit low energy performance. They urgently require renovation work.

For the first time, scientists have investigated, for the first time, the use of a novel form of metals as fuel for standard car engines. The concept includes combustion free of harmful emissions and the recycling of spent fuel.
