A hydrophilic polymer material

Thermoplastic materials used in biomedicine are typically hydrophobic, meaning they ‘dislike’ water. This property has presented significant challenges in terms of building more durable biomedical devices - until now.

New technological advances for the third generation of Solar cells

One EU project’s work is making more efficient perovskite formulations, used in solar power generation, more readily available to us all.
Perovskite (a crystal made of three components) solar cells could give the photovoltaics energy sector the boost it needs. The benefit of solar cells is that they can be made semi-transparent, while displaying a much higher kWh/nominal power ratio when compared to traditional silicon solar cells.

Postdoctoral Fellowships, Van Andel Research Institute, U.S.A. (2019)

Around the world, scholars have long suffered harassment, detention, torture, and other forms of persecution as a result of their work. In the worst cases, scholars pay with their lives for their dedication to their academic work and freedom of thought. The Institute of International Education (IIE), an independent not-for-profit organization, has participated in the rescue of persecuted scholars since its founding in 1919. In 2002, IIE launched the Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) to formalize its commitment to protecting the lives, voices, and ideas of scholars around the globe.

Inline real-time 4.0 quality monitoring in food production

An EU-funded project is using innovative technology to fight against food waste and loss.

Social innovation to improve physical activity and sedentary behaviour through elite European football clubs: European Fans in Training

One project proves the adage that for many millions of fans, football is much more than a game, by delivering an evidence-based health programme across European clubs.

The EuroFIT project harnessed the loyalty of football fans towards their clubs, to improve men’s health. The EU-supported project used state of the art behavioural science and social science to attract men to lifestyle change that would last a lifetime. Men worked together as a team to make improvements in their physical activity levels, diet, body mass index (BMI), well-being, vitality and health biomarkers.

CO2 capture from cement production

Cement’s CO2 emissions can only be mitigated with carbon capture technologies. An EU team evaluated the options.

Climate change, also called global warming, is already starkly evident. The main cause is CO2 released into the atmosphere from human activity.

The Court of Elizabeth I – A European Drama

EU-funded research is shedding light on how European writers engaged with the subject of Elizabethan England.

High Performance Seasonal Solar Energy Latent Heat Thermal Storage Using Low Grade, Low Melting Temperature Metallic Alloys

As renewable energy gains a greater foothold in the energy mix, the focus on energy storage will increase correspondingly. Materials that increase efficiency of energy storage systems are urgently required.

Otoliths as metabolic loggers: Examining the physiological basis for climate resilience in wild populations of marine fish

Climate change is fuelling changes in fish behaviour and energy budgets. An EU-funded project has used fish ear stones to measure fluctuations in metabolic rate linked to adaptation in cod populations.

Fish keep track of their speed and orientation in the water while swimming using calcified structures called otoliths in their inner ear. Carbon, in the form of CO2 and calcium from the blood, makes up the calcium carbonate in these ear stones. Carbon in these otoliths is found in several forms – multiple isotopes – including the slightly heavy 13C and the lighter 12C.

OmniBot: Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing Bot platform

Conversational artificial iintelligence (AI) such as chatbots, messaging apps and virtual assistants still has a way to go before enhancing user experience, creating operational efficiencies and reducing costs. An EU initiative developed Europe’s first voice and conversational AI platform to speed up this process.

INNOVATIVE FUNCTIONAL PAINT FOR AIR PURIFICATION

Certain nanoparticles have been found to have a catalytic effect that reduces airborne pollutants. This process has been used to produce a non-toxic paint that also purifies the air.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) found in traditional paint products can be as bad for human health as car emissions. Now the AIRLITE project has developed a natural paint product with the help of EU funds. Their paint uses nanoparticles instead of toxic chemicals that break down VOCs and airborne pollutants while also repelling bacteria, viruses and mould spores.
